Opening of the height-of-summer exhibition season

At 4 p.m. on Friday 5 July, Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre will open its height-of-summer season with exhibitions by Latvian, Baltic and international artists. The opening ceremony will be preceded by a conference of Baltic ceramicists, scheduled to start at noon sharp.

This year, the height of summer is fast and fleeting, overflowing with luxurious greenery and fragrance, with linden trees and jasmine, drenched in scented blossoms, and the tangy notes of freshly cut grass all blending in a lingering scented bouquet that follows us in our day-to-day steps as we lose ourselves in the summer splendour.

The exhibition bouquet of the Rothko Centre’s summer season promises to be equally rich and opulent. The solo show of artist Maibritt Ulvedal Bjelke, “Chromatic matters”, will delight with abundance of colour. Two ceramic exhibitions will be an anchor of stability to this chromatic riot. The first is juried exhibition of Baltic ceramics, “Basics”, organised within the framework of Latvian Centenary and featuring artwork by 70 artists. The second, “Basic Elements”, is a solo show by Finnish ceramic artist Kirsi Kivivirta, laureate of the “Memory Box” competition. A bright addition to the colour palette of the summer exhibition season will come from “Cilicia Breeze”, a group exhibition from Turkey, whose contributing artists talk about their fundamental values and pay homage to the rich diversity and brilliance of Turkish culture.

A special atmosphere will be conjured up by artistic dialogue in a group project “Location/ Dislocation. Between Remembering and Forgetting”, featuring Jonny Briggs (Great Britain), Sigita Daugule and Vineta Kaulača (Latvia), Kaisu Koivisto (Finland), Katie Pratt (Great Britain) and Karlis Rekevics (the USA). Meanwhile, different dimensions and frames of mind inspired by the spaces in and around Daugavpils will be offered in a group exhibition of the international painting symposium “Silva Linarte”. Finally, artist Marietta Patricia Leis will give a light finishing touch to the height of summer season with her solo show “Air”.

The opening ceremony of the new exhibition season will be preceded by an international conference of Baltic ceramic artists, scheduled to run from noon sharp until 2 p.m. at the conference hall of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre. The conference is organised within the framework of “Basics”, the international juried exhibition of Baltic ceramics, with a view to tracing the development of Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian ceramic art.
The height-of-summer exhibition season will be available until 8 September 2019.
