INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM. MARK ROTHKO 2016
- - 06.11.2016
For the 12th time the International Symposium " Mark Rothko 2016 " took place in Daugavpils, however this was the first time when it was comprised of nine only-female artists from nine countries. It was the first time in the relatively long history of symposia when out of 122 applicants the international jury selected a team of ladies. Of course, a closer look at their works speaks for itself: the key factor for choosing them lies in their mastery. ANATOLIJS ZELČS, VJAČESLAVS FOMINS, ANATOLIJS ŠANDUROVS. THE PARALLELS
- - 06.11.2016
The term “a parallel” covers so much and yet so little. The word is often used in culture, politics, and economy, in order to compare and at the same time – to show the common, the conjunctive, the similarly and yet individually reflective. It makes us think about the parallel nature, parallel expressions, parallel lives. SOLOMON GERSHOV. OVERCOMING

- - 14.10.2016
A cycle of portraits by the artist Ekaterina Ezhkova was inspired by an old school photograph found in an archive of some women Gymnasium in the pre-revolutionary Russia. These portraits are realistic and somewhat illusive. They appear on canvases through layers of time. Characters as well as stylistics of portrait art belong to another, gone-by time. Mostly they are only faces, painted with acrylic on a partly primed canvas by a slight, almost imperceptible fine brush. The gentle touch is a reflection of characters and destinies. It is amazing how the artist manages to achieve maximum expressiveness of an image with such an asceticism of means. Her portraits mainly emphasize eyes – sometimes confused, sometimes questioning, sometimes serious. They live their intense life in a single focus-point. They are like wide-open souls suddenly encountering our stares with their openness and vulnerability.

In the beginning of the IV International Ceramic Art Symposium CERAMIC LABORATORY in Daugavpils, no one could guess the content of the final exhibition of the symposium because ceramic art is usually influenced by many unpredictable factors, which often lead to the most unpredicted and sudden turns resulting in something different and maybe even better. The Symposium took place in Daugavpils for the fourth time, and this year it is the final event of the 1st Latvian International Ceramic Biennale, as well as a lyric introduction to the following ceramic events in Daugavpils.
