X: Free Space
The stress of everyday life and the confusion caused by fear and desire often overshadow one’s incredibly satisfying inner peace. By burdening our inner space with things or thoughts, experiences or rubbish, we stand in our own way, obstructing our acceptance of our true self. This chaos often follows us day to day, hindering, destroying or limiting our creative powers. How can one be able to speak out to the world then? After all, creation, besides freedom and courage to engage in the act of making something, also involves responsibility. As we embark on a creative journey, we should cultivate and purify our inner freedom, each within ourselves, and learn to respect the world of another, in this case, our co-creator. Or maybe creativity alone is enough to free one from the burden of a bothersome daily blur? Whatever experiences arise, let us allow them in, let them be and manifest themselves, gradually recognising the silence that fosters and expands the free space within us.
The X Project is a continuous art event where creators from different fields are invited to work in pairs on a joint work of art, sharing different creative and technological experiences and ideas and being given free space to interpret the theme. This is a great challenge, but it offers an invaluable experience to creators who often come up with unexpected, intriguing works that are much appreciated by art lovers and enrich Lithuania’s cultural heritage. The first X Project in 2016 was primarily focused on the artists of Panevėžys to encourage their artistic collaboration and to represent them in a broader domestic and international context. Having gained creative momentum, the project keeps growing every year, as participants from other Lithuanian cities and even other countries are joining the initiative. X: Free Space is the fourth project in the series. It brings together 18 creative duos from different mediums (painting, photography, ceramics, music, etc.). As previous instalments have already demonstrated, every exhibition goer will find something they can relate to. To support the idea of the emergent Art Centre of Panevėžys, all the works from the project are donated to the city to add to its growing collection.

X: EGO
Explanations for the nature of the human EGO and different theories concerning it can be found in psychology treatises, ancient religious writings, and various contemporary communities that pursue spiritual self-discovery. It seems that such a simple word from everyday life is of no concern to us. But this is only true until the moment we meet ourselves. Maybe not everyone gets a feel of that meeting. However, as soon as it happens, they ask themselves: “Who am I? And where is this “I”? And who is the one that feels, sees, hears and creates?” It is generally believed that artists are among those sensitive ones who see and feel the world in a special, much more perceptive and subtle way. In a peculiar artistic language, they broadcast it all to the rest of the world. But they are, at the same time, creative hermits. Individualists. So how does one artist’s EGO feel when it meets another? The X: Ego project provokes artists to recognise their EGO and meet another one in the process of co-creation whilst working on a shared project with a creative partner. And it is from this angle that you dive into co-creation, through your own search for the self, feeling the other by your side.

Its latest instalment, X: Ego, brought together 18 pairs of creators from different fields. Along with traditional mediums like painting, photography, metalwork, etc., here we also see some uncommon disciplines such as poetry, rarely featured in visual arts. Even a clergyman blended in harmoniously, joining in the creative process. Indeed, as previous instalments have already shown, every exhibition goer will find something they can relate to. To support the idea of the emergent Art Centre of Panevėžys, all the works from this year’s project, just like the outputs of its previous instalments, are donated to the city to add to the future centre’s growing collection.
