In Lithuania will open Mark Rothko-Themed Exhibition
To celebrate the approaching 115th birthday of the world-renowned Daugavpils-born artist Mark Rothko, an exhibition of museum quality reproductions of Mark Rothko’s paintings and digital content from the collection of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre will be opened at 4 p.m. on Friday, 18 May in Zarasai Regional Museum (Lithuania).
Mark Rothko has said that art is an adventure into an unknown world, which can be explored only by those willing to take the risk. Five years into existence, Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre continues to rise to the challenge of providing opportunities to explore the ostensibly fragile yet beguiling world of art created by Mark Rothko.
In order to tell the life story of the world-famous artist, his creative pursuits, discoveries and their manifestations, the centre exhibits reproductions of Mark Rothko’s work not only in the artist’s native town, but also elsewhere in Latvia and abroad. The centre prides itself on possessing a fine reproduction collection of Mark Rothko’s paintings, featuring 40 museum quality copies on paper and canvas. They were received as gifts from the artist’s family – tokens of commitment to continue cooperation and work towards fulfilment of a shared dream about a contemporary art centre.
Zarasai Regional Museum will exhibit nine copies of Rothko’s original works from the collection of Kate Rothko-Prizel and Christopher Rothko, which include samples of the artist’s early work, the surrealist and the classical periods, and as a digital exhibition “The Rothko Phenomenon. Digitalized” about the artist’s life and creative journey.
