Sixth anniversary of the Rothko Centre

On Friday 26 April, Daugavpils Mark Rothko Centre will celebrate its sixth anniversary with a lecture, a film screening, a discussion and the opening of the new exhibition season.

Peace and tension, tension and peace beat the changing rhythm to the passage of time, linking yesterday, today and tomorrow. Together or separately, they stir the minds of individual artists and the general public. Tension grips the exhibition “Artist and Witness” by American artist Boris Lurie, the founder of No!Art movement. In a similar vein, peace and tension are the two basic concepts directly or indirectly contemplated by participants of the traditional spring exhibition of artists from Latgale region. An equal degree of tension and peace is conjured and sustained by two ceramic artists from Hungary – Márta Radics (“Kingdom”) and Zsófia Karsai (“Step by Step”). Even at times when we declare to ourselves that we like something, as Maija Bērziņa has done in her artist statement, quiet confidence is inconceivable without straining emotional undertones of lived experience. The experience and traditions of 40 years have found their reflection in a group project from the Funen Printmaking Workshop (Denmark), where peace and tension alternate to create a constant drive to move forward.

All these blends of peace and tension, so distinct yet also alike in their individual tones and qualities, can be traced in the six new exhibition projects, which will mark the sixth anniversary of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, declaring it a home for “art in motion”.

From 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. on 26 April, by way of celebrating yet another birthday of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, each visitor who will come with the gift of a sketchpad, will gain free admission to the centre.
