Rothko centre to close a ceramic symposium with an exhibition opening

At 4 p.m. on Wednesday, 21 June, the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre will close the 11th International CERAMIC LABORATORY Symposium with an exhibition opening, celebrating the artists and displaying the tangible outcome of two intense creative weeks.

The symposium is organised by the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Ceramics in cooperation with the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre. Its eleventh iteration brought together Shamai Sam Gibsh (Israel), Karin Putsch-Grassi (Italy), Ken Yutdanai Sripaiboon (Thailand), Ann Nurga (Estonia), Junghoon Yoon (South Korea), Adil Writer (India), Una Gura (Latvia), Lilija Zeiļa (Latvia), Ilona Abdulajeva (Latvia), Kristīne Nicmane (Latvia) and Nellija Dzalba (Latvia).

The symposium began on 6 June with an inaugural exhibition. What followed was a packed creative fortnight, with the artists visiting the tourist attractions of Daugavpils and Latgale, working in the studio, firing their work in ceramic kilns, giving public presentations and practical demonstrations. The programme is about to culminate on 21 June with a new exhibition that will celebrate the collective tangible output of this vibrant creative forum and formally mark its conclusion.

Two days before the exhibition opening, at 3 p.m. on 19 and 20 June, the Rothko Centre invites all art lovers who wish to know more about this year’s symposium team to attend public presentations by the participant artists, who will talk about their creative backgrounds and open up on how they approach the ceramic medium.

Admission to all symposium events is free of charge.

Financial supporters: The symposium is produced with REACT-EU funding towards Europe’s post-pandemic recovery and supported by the Daugavpils City Council, Caparol and Devona.
