Public Sculpture by Polish Artist Dmitrij Buławka Fankidejski to be Unveiled at the Rothko Museum Sculpture Garden
Public sculpture LIMEN by Polish artist Dmitrij Buławka Fankidejski will be unveiled at the Rothko Museum Sculpture Garden at 3 pm on 25 July 2026, becoming the latest addition to the museum’s contemporary sculpture and ceramics collection.
LIMEN, the Latin word for “threshold”, evokes a moment of transition – a boundary between what is known and what is only beginning to emerge. The sculpture takes the form of a crystalline rock formation whose subtle colouring recalls clouds illuminated by the sky. Bringing together the weight of matter and a sense of lightness, it becomes a symbolic meeting point of earth and air, permanence and transience. Rather than depicting a specific landscape, the work invites viewers to pause at the threshold of imagination – a space where nature and emotion intertwine, and where the boundaries between them remain deliberately open.
Born in Poland in 1988, Dmitrij Buławka Fankidejski teaches at his alma mater, the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. His multidisciplinary practice spans sculpture, installation, drawing, ceramics and metalwork. Designing and building his own gas kilns for firing ceramics and melting metals, he has developed a distinctive artistic language grounded in both technical innovation and material experimentation. His work has earned multiple international awards, including the Grand Prix at the 5th International UNICUM Ceramic Triennial in Slovenia (2023). He is also the author of the Ayrton Senna monument in Wałbrzych, Poland, and has presented solo exhibitions in Poland, Lithuania and Czechia. His works are held in significant public collections, including the Art Museum in Cluj-Napoca (Romania), the Rothko Museum and the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Ceramics in Daugavpils (Latvia), the Panevėžys Civic Art Gallery (Lithuania), as well as numerous private collections.
Created at the Rothko Museum in collaboration with the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Ceramics during the 14th International CERAMIC LABORATORY Symposium, LIMEN will be permanently installed in the Rothko Museum Sculpture Garden, enriching the outdoor space of the Daugavpils Fortress with a new sculptural landmark.
Earlier that day, at 2.00 pm, the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Ceramics will open the solo exhibition “How We All Go in a Line Like This. Fortress” by Estonian artist Leena Kuutma at the 4METRES Gallery (8 Hospitāļa Street).
