Artwork by more than 200 artists at the Rothko Centre’s new exhibition season

At 4 p.m. on Friday 6 July, Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre will launch its new exhibition season with three new exhibitions, featuring more than 200 artists.

Summer has come with sweltering heat and sunshine. In a similar vein, the halls of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre will soon be ablaze with artistic outputs from more than 200 artists of regional, national and international backgrounds.

Uncharacteristically, this season will feature only three exhibitions, but the curators are certain that even this modest number will surprise the public with unique contents, novel ideas and impressive scope.

The juried exhibition “Martinsons Award” is the satellite event of the 2nd Latvia International Ceramics Biennale, instituted to commemorate the world-renowned Daugavpils-born ceramic artist Pēteris Martinsons. This time, based on selection by an international panel, the juried exhibition will showcase 100 best works from the total of 395 applications. Selected artwork comes from 29 different countries. 2nd Latvia International Ceramics Biennale is part of the celebratory programme of Latvian centenary. It is organised with a view to developing the ceramic discipline, promoting cooperation among the Baltic states and paying a tribute to Pēteris Martinsons, widely considered the father of Latvian contemporary ceramics.

Along with the most recent winners of the Martinsons Award, the new exhibition season of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre will come with the opening of a one-man show “The Fortress Exhibition” by Dainis Pundurs – the national gold prize winner of the 2016 Martinsons Award, which was contested within the framework of the 1st Latvia International Ceramics Biennale.

Meanwhile, the exhibition “100 in Latvian Art” will pool the work of 106 artists who represent different generations and media. The exhibition was conceived as a visual narrative with no borders or limitations, which would span the artistic scene of today and let the viewership meet several generations of Latvian artists at once, focusing on similarities and differences, things current and relevant, which, at different times, inspired artists to create in glass or ceramics, painting or textile. Can the exhibition answer the question – what is happening in Latvian art? We leave it to the artists, art critics and the public who will flock to see the exhibition and form their own informed opinion.

The new season’s exhibitions will be available until 9 September 2018.

At 4 p.m. through 5 p.m. on 6 July, during the season’s opening event, the new exhibitions will be available free of charge.
