Rothko Museum will display its collection in Rēzekne
At 3 p.m. on Friday, 10 January, the Latgale Culture and History Museum in Rēzekne will unveil “Diffusion of Boundaries”, an exhibition featuring eight artists from the Rothko Museum’s painting collection.
As present-day museums evolve to redefine their roles and reassess the heritage in their collections, they are increasingly becoming open platforms for dialogue on pressing societal issues. Among these is the resilience of physical and symbolic boundaries continuously eroded by geopolitical, socioeconomic, and environmental processes. These forces reshape collective and individual values, leading to new perspectives and reimagined constructs of the world order. “Diffusion of Boundaries”, featuring select pieces from the Rothko Museum Collection, adds an artistic touch to the debate on the resilience and relevance of boundaries and borders through contributions from Europe, North America, Australia, and Asia.
The featured artworks were created between 2018 and 2023 at the Mark Rothko International Painting Symposium hosted by the Rothko Museum. Each piece reflects the artist’s personal take on what modernist art is and means in the present day, when abstract painting, in particular, is a no-limits zone of absolute creative freedom, where colour, form, and individual technique dissolve all borders and invite endless interpretations from both the artist and the viewer.
The exhibition features Pawel Wasowski and Kuba Janyst (Poland), Tomas Rudokas (Lithuania), Ruth Philo (UK), Andrew Colbert (USA), Sue Beyer (Australia), Árpád Forgó (Hungary), and Ritu Aggarwal (India).
The exhibition is on show from 10 January to 22 February 2025.
The Rothko Museum in Daugavpils is one of the most ambitious 21st-century cultural projects in Eastern Europe – a multifunctional hub for contemporary art, culture, and education, located in the historic artillery arsenal of the Daugavpils Fortress. The museum’s collection has evolved with the vision to establish a cultural venue honouring the internationally celebrated American artist Mark Rothko (1903–1970) in his native Daugavpils. Today, the collection has grown to over three thousand artworks across various mediums, featuring Latvian and international artists who expand upon the modernist tradition.
