Skaidrīte Cihovska

Skaidrīte Cihovska was born in 1937 in Skrunda. Having graduated from the Rīga Secondary School of Applied Art (1957), she pursued a degree at the Art Academy of Latvia, Ceramics Department (1957–1964). 1963 through 1966, Cihovska was Chief Creative Officer at the Jelgava Ceramic Factory. In 1969, she joined the Latvian Artists Union and started working at the experimental ceramic studio in Ķīpsala, which marked a significant turning point in the style and rhythm of her personal and professional life. Dating back to 1958, Cihovska’s extensive exhibition record includes several solo exhibitions and countless group shows in Latvia and beyond. She kept exhibiting until her passing in 2023.

Throughout her creative career, Cihovska made decorative and functional ceramic design objects and monumental sculptural pieces, known in the 1960s and 70s as “garden ceramics”. However, her primary concern has always been the decorative side. This was equally true for seemingly practical household items and the larger non-functional pieces.

Cihovska’s art exudes stability and precision. The artist was drawn to a rational language of form and enjoyed blending function and decor. Never overly ornate, her ceramic objects and wares embody classical simplicity.

REFLECTIONS showcases artworks by the outstanding Latvian ceramicist Skaidrīte Cihovskas from the Latvian National Art Museum and the Rothko Museum collections.
