14th International Latgale Graphic Art Symposium

Symposium exhibition

From 23 February to 8 March, the Rothko Museum brought together artists from Europe, Asia and North America for the 14th International Latgale Graphic Art Symposium. Conceived as a vibrant platform for professional exchange and creative exploration, the symposium celebrates printmaking as a dynamic field of artistic research and practice, where disciplines meet and new ideas emerge.

At the heart of the symposium is the studio, approached as a laboratory – an open, experimental environment where ideas are tested, challenged and transformed into new works. Working side by side in shared studio spaces, the artists navigate the interplay between precision and chance, balancing each printmaker’s individual expression with the group’s collective dynamic.

During the two-week residency, nine professional printmakers from Italy, Canada, Poland, India, Ukraine, Lithuania and Latvia created new works for the museum’s collection and for the exhibition that that now presents the outcome of their shared endeavour. Drawing on the cultural and natural landscape of Latgale, the commanding architecture of Daugavpils Fortress, and the legacy of Mark Rothko, the artists also engaged in sustained reflection on the role of printmaking within contemporary visual art. The exhibition that has emerged is marked by thematic and stylistic richness. It celebrates the singular artistic vision of each participant while demonstrating the enduring capacity of printmaking to unite tradition and innovation. Diverse techniques and printing processes unfold here as compelling means of expression, reflecting thoughtful responses to the questions and influences of our time.

The 14th International Latgale Graphic Art Symposium featured the following artists: Alessandro Cugno (Italy), John Graham (Canada), Kamila Bednarska and Katarzyna Tereszkiewic (Poland), Kateryna Svirgunenko and Valentyna Ariepieva (Ukraine), Vijay Kethavath (India), Nida Shah (Lithuania) and Ināra Garklāva (Latvia).

Conceived and produced by the SIVIA Association, the symposium enjoyed the support of the Daugavpils City Council and Latvia’s Culture Capital Foundation.

Since its inception in 2013, the Rothko Museum’s international printmaking symposium has brought together over a hundred artists from nearly forty countries. Today, it continues to revitalise the graphic medium in Daugavpils and to strengthen Latgale’s international profile, attracting artists to this crossroads of cultures and influences.
