In September Mark Rothko’s 111th Birthday Celebrations will take Place in Rīga and Daugavpils
Running from September 23 to 25 in Ziedonis hall of National Library of Latvia, Rīga, and Mark Rothko Art Centre, Daugavpils the 111th birthday celebrations of admirable artist Mark Rothko will take place. This project is one of the constituent parts of “Rīga 2014” events programme “Okeāna alkas” (Longing for the Ocean).
The first stage of the project will be an opening of exhibition “Digital and Printed Phenomenon” and will be seen in the EU House Art gallery (on the 1st floor) from September 15 to 30.
On September 17 in Ziedonis hall of National Library of Latvia the film lecture about Mark Rothko and his art heritage will be held.
On the evening of September 23 in Ziedonis hall of National Library of Latvia English composer James Clarke will give a performance where conductor Mārtiņš Ozoliņš has specially created the chamber band of the best musicians of Latvia. The band will perform two opuses of the composer – Untitled No.1 and a new composition 2014-N specially made for this event.
On September 23 and 25 in Rīga and Daugavpils the international conference “Abstract Expressionism: the Language of Emotions” will be held in which world-known art scientists and artists inspired by Rothko from Paris, New York, London, Madrid, San Paulo and Moscow will participate.
Among participants will be Rothko researcher, British art historian Dr. David Anfam, the master of abstract paintings of 360 degrees and colour perception psychology researcher Sanford Wurmfeld from New York, Russian art curator and critic Victor Misiano, professor of Architecture Walter Unterrainer from Aarhus, French academician Annie CohenSolal who will make a presentation on Latvian version of the book dedicated to Mark Rothko, as well as both artist’s children Christopher Rothko and Kate Rothko Prizel.
On September 24 in the train Rīga-Daugavpils ”Laboratory of Silence” the passengers will have an opportunity to participate in multimedia drama of Rothko by feeling a silence and carpe diem.
On the evening of September 24 in Daugavpils the multimedia performance “Rothko Inspires” with interaction of modern art, music and multimedia will take place with a culmination at midnight.
On September 25 in Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre the conference “Abstract Expressionism: the Language of Emotions” will continue. New autumn season exhibitions also will be opened. The unique project –exhibition “Contemporary Painting of Latvia” will be commend to the attention of visitors that will represent both common and distinct features of modern Latvian paintings from the point of view of the following Latvian painters – Sigita Daugule, Jānis Dukāts, Andris Eglītis, Daiga Krūze, Viktorija Valujeva, Andris Vītoliņš and Otto Zitmanis. Moreover, the works of Irish painter Kristina Huxly will also be seen, as well as the exhibition of British artist Peter Griffin and final exhibition of the international residency “Mark Rothko 2014” will be opened.
