Autumn exhibition season 2025
On 5 September, the Rothko Museum kicked off its autumn exhibition season with six thoughtfully curated shows, each conceived especially for the museum. In painting, Sandra Strēle unveils The Night Before, a deeply personal and lyrical exploration of hydro-feminist themes and the porous borders between motherhood, memory, and ecology. Meanwhile, Uģis Auziņš invites you into Improvised, a sensitive, landscape-infused reflection on nature’s fleeting moods and subtleties. Ceramics enthusiasts have much to explore in the 5th Latvia Ceramics Biennale programme, represented by four compelling exhibitions: Martinsons Award 2025 – the international juried showcase drawn from the Biennale’s flagship competition, featuring standout pieces selected from over 900 submissions; Matchstick in the Sand by Lithuanian artist Milena Pirštelienė, a meditative piece about memory and attention, rendering the seemingly insignificant with poetic nuance; Creatures by Sanita Ābelīte, an imaginative collection animate with beings both mythic and organic, conjured into a world both playful and immersive; and Lost for Words, a showcase of Poland’s contemporary ceramics, echoing the emotion and resonance beyond speech through form, texture, and presence.
The autumn season runs through 23 November, with two exhibitions – Martinsons Award 2025 and Matchstick in the Sand – continuing until 1 February 2026. We warmly invite you to experience it all.
