To mark the 95th birthday of P\u0113teris Martinsons, one of Latvia\u2019s most celebrated 20th\u2011century ceramicists, the Rothko Museum presents \u201cClay Pixels\u201d, an interactive digital exhibition inviting visitors to engage with and reinterpret the artist\u2019s work.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The exhibition centres on five of Martinsons\u2019s ceramic pieces, each rendered as a 3D digital model. Outlines of these models are printed on special sheets available in the exhibition space. Visitors are encouraged to colour and personalise the towers and crows that were central to Martinsons\u2019s visual language, creating their own unique interpretation within the exhibition.<\/p>\n

Contributing your artwork is simple. Scan the QR code on a sheet and follow the instructions on your device to photograph and upload your coloured drawing. Your creation will appear on the exhibition\u2019s screen in 3D, alongside the contributions of other visitors.<\/p>\n

\u201cClay Pixels\u201d is on view and open to visitor participation on the museum\u2019s top floor throughout 2026.<\/p>\n

The exhibition has been realised in collaboration with \u201cWe Rock\u201d and with the support of Latvia\u2019s Culture Capital Foundation.<\/p>\n

Born in Daugavpils on 28 January 1931, P\u0113teris Martinsons (1931\u20132013) made history as Latvia\u2019s most internationally celebrated 20th-century ceramicist. His pioneering work transformed Latvian ceramics, establishing it as a vibrant and contemporary artistic medium. The Rothko Museum holds an extensive collection of his works, with hundreds on permanent display in the museum\u2019s ceramic gallery, Martinsons House. Since 2016, the museum has hosted the international Martinsons Award exhibition as part of the Latvia Ceramics Biennale, honouring his legacy and celebrating the enduring vitality of the ceramic medium.<\/em><\/p>\n
