{"id":28108,"date":"2019-03-28T08:30:48","date_gmt":"2019-03-28T08:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rothkomuseum.com\/?p=28108"},"modified":"2019-03-28T08:30:48","modified_gmt":"2019-03-28T08:30:48","slug":"opening-british-artists-exhibition-rothko-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rothkomuseum.com\/en\/opening-british-artists-exhibition-rothko-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"Opening of a British artist&#8217;s exhibition at the Rothko Centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>At 4 p.m. on 12 April, a solo exhibition &#8220;I see nature like colour&#8221; by award-winning British artist Gillian Ayres (1930-2018) will be opened near the display of select original works by Mark Rothko.<\/strong><!--more--><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of Britain\u2019s most significant abstract painters, known for her huge vibrant canvases bursting with colour.\u00a0 Inspired by abstract expressionist art in the United States, Ayres painted in a lyrical, gestural, non-geometric abstract style that stood in contrast to the hard-edge forms of her contemporaries. Never didactic, her oeuvre illustrates an artist constantly experimenting with the possibilities of paint. \u201cMy paintings are about painting, about shape and colour, not telling stories,\u201d Ayres has said.\u00a0 Her work, created by layering thick layers of pigment, draws on a variety of styles and art historical movements. \u201cThe paintings are not a direct response to any particular moment or subject,\u201d the artist has noted. \u201cI don\u2019t expect people to all have the same feeling when looking at them. Like looking at art, what inspires one is very personal, and sometimes one doesn\u2019t know or doesn\u2019t want to reveal where it comes from.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ayres was honoured with the Royal Academician in 1991 and a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2011 for her contribution to British painting. Her work is currently held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Gallery in London.<\/h5>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The exhibition at Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre will be available until 29 September 2019.<\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em><u>With the kind support of:<\/u> PIFO Gallery, Beijing and its owner Wang Xinyou, Philip
